Probably after the common cold, dental decay (cavities) is the most common problem to affect people of all ages.
Teeth are made of calcium, phosphates and other components integrated together to form a complex structure.
Twelve types of bacteria of the 100 trillion which are found in our mouth are found in plaque which builds up on tooth surfaces. Cavities are very common but do not cause pain until they expose the nerve of the tooth.
Measures can be taken to prevent cavities, such as:
Diet modification: By reducing the amount of sugar you intake, this can help to cut down on cavities.
Fluoride application: Fluorides are very effective in helping to reduce cavities. Many water systems contain fluoride but it is also found in many toothpastes and mouth rinses. Flouride treatments have been proven very successful in limiting cavities.
Oral hygiene maintenance: Make sure you brush and floss after every meal. It is also a good idea to use some sort of a rinse afterword as well. If you are not able to brush, there are chewing gums on the market which can help in removing food particles. The best bet is to brush and floss after meals.
